About this design
The Onion Dome Ornament has the graceful curve of the domes found on Eastern European churches and many vintage glass ornaments. It rises to a soft point at the top, swells into a full rounded body and narrows again at the base. A ring loop sits at the tip for hanging.
In the color version, a gold band wraps around the widest part of the body, like the painted stripe on an old-world glass ornament. The solid file is one clean piece.
Project ideas
- Old-world tree themes. Pair with finials and melon ornaments for a vintage-glass look.
- Wood or acrylic ornaments. The smooth outline cuts beautifully on a laser.
- Cards and invitations. A teal-and-gold ornament on cream cardstock.
- Shirts. A bold single ornament on a sweatshirt.
- Decals. On glass jars or the front of a gift box.
Color ideas
The default color version is teal with a silver loop and gold band. Other ideas:
- Deep red with a gold band for a traditional look
- Gold with a white band for a gilded ornament
- Navy with a silver band
- Pastel mint with a pink band for a retro style
Size and cutting tips
This ornament passes our cut checks from about 2 inches tall. The loop is the only small cut-out; weed it first.
For layered cardstock, cut the band layer from metallic paper and glue it across the widest part of the body.
Step by step: a decal on a clear ornament
- Measure a flat-sided clear ornament or a flat acrylic blank.
- Size the solid SVG to about two-thirds of the blank’s height.
- Cut it from teal or gold permanent vinyl.
- Weed the loop opening and apply transfer tape.
- Clean the blank with rubbing alcohol, then apply the decal from the center outward.
- Add a contrasting band of vinyl across the widest part for the painted-stripe look.
Good to know
The onion shape is wider at the bottom than the top, so it sits visually lower on a branch and looks heavier and more precious than a plain ball.
Variations to try
- Add tiny dots of white paint around the band for a hand-painted, folk-art finish.
- Cut it from patterned paper, such as a small floral print, for a vintage Christmas card.
- Make three in graduated sizes and hang them one above another.
Pairs well with
The Teardrop Finial Ornament and the Ribbed Melon Ornament make a matching vintage trio.
