Christmas tree SVG files that cut cleanly

The Christmas tree is the most recognizable holiday shape there is, which is exactly why a good tree file matters. A tree has to read instantly from a distance on a porch sign and still look neat at two inches on a gift tag. Every tree in this collection was drawn to do both.

Most of the trees are a single connected shape: the tiers, trunk and star are merged, so the whole tree lifts off the mat at once and stays in register on a shirt. A few modern designs are deliberately made of separate bands, and their pages say so up front. Every file passed our automated checks for closed paths, tiny fragments, unweedable cut-outs and hairline details, and each page tells you the smallest width that keeps every part at least a millimeter wide.

Each tree comes in three styles. The solid style is one silhouette for single-color vinyl, iron-on, stencils and engraving. The outline style follows the tree’s edge in a filled line, which looks lighter on mugs and glass. The color style splits the design into layers, usually tree, trunk and topper, so you can cut each part from a different material and stack them.

Styles in this collection

Classic and traditional

The trees most people picture: stacked green tiers, a brown trunk and a gold star on top. They suit family shirts, Christmas cards and anything with a traditional look.

See the Classic Tiered Christmas Tree, the Scalloped Christmas Tree, the Snow-Capped Christmas Tree and the Garland Swoop Christmas Tree.

Modern and minimal

Simplified shapes built from lines, bars and dots. They look at home in Scandinavian-style decor, on minimal cards and on sleek tumblers.

See the Modern Stacked Christmas Tree, the Chevron Christmas Tree, the Fishbone Branch Christmas Tree, the Spiral Garland Christmas Tree and the Bauble Dot Christmas Tree.

Rustic and woodland

Jagged pine silhouettes and forest scenes for cabins, farmhouse signs and outdoor-themed gifts.

See the Sawtooth Pine Tree and Forest Trio Christmas Trees.

Cut-out and decorated

Trees with shapes cut out of them: a heart, a row of ornaments, garland swoops. Cut-outs let a background color show through and add detail without adding layers.

See the Heart Cut-Out Christmas Tree, the Ornament Cut-Out Christmas Tree, the Round Badge Christmas Tree and the Potted Tabletop Christmas Tree.

Project ideas

  • Matching family shirts. A single tree design in different colors for each family member, with names underneath, makes a great holiday photo.
  • Wood signs. A tall tree on a narrow plank beside a phrase like “Merry and Bright” (in your own font) suits a porch or entryway.
  • Layered cardstock cards. Cut the tree from green glitter cardstock, the star from gold and the trunk from kraft, then layer them on a white card.
  • Gift tags and place cards. Small trees at 2 inches, punched with a hole, make neat tags. Write names on the trunk area for place cards.
  • Advent calendars. Cut 24 small trees and number them for a wall advent calendar.
  • Tumblers and mugs. The modern line trees wrap nicely around a cup in permanent vinyl.
  • Laser-cut ornaments. Engrave the solid style on wood or cut it from colored acrylic.

Choosing materials

Material Good tree styles Tips
Adhesive vinyl All Weed cut-outs before the outer waste so the tree stays flat.
Heat-transfer vinyl Solid one-piece trees Mirror the design; layer HTV only where a press time allows two presses.
Glitter cardstock Classic and rustic Use a strong-grip mat and the glitter cardstock setting.
Felt Classic, scalloped, potted Bold shapes only; fine lines will pull.
Wood (laser) All Engrave solids; cut outlines for a hollow look.

Sizes that work

Project Typical height
Gift tag, earring 1.5–2.5 in
Card front 3–5 in
Mug or tumbler 3–4 in
Child’s shirt 5–7 in
Adult shirt 8–11 in
Porch sign 12–24 in

Each page lists the smallest width that passes our cut checks, so start there for small projects.

Colors that work for trees

Classic green with a brown trunk and gold star never goes out of style, and it is the default for most of these designs. For something different, try:

  • White on kraft or wood for a Scandinavian look.
  • Red and pink for a playful, retro tree.
  • Sage and gold for a soft, modern palette.
  • Navy and silver for an elegant, wintry tree.
  • Buffalo-check style: a black tree on red background with a white star.

Change any layer on the design page before you download to see exactly how your palette looks.

Cutting tips for trees

  • Weld text before cutting. If you add a name, weld or attach it so it cuts in position.
  • Keep multi-piece trees grouped. For stacked designs, group the pieces before you size them so the gaps scale evenly.
  • Weed cut-outs first. On designs with heart or ornament cut-outs, remove the small pieces before the outer waste.
  • Mirror for iron-on. Every time, for every mat.
  • Test a small tree first. Cutting one 2-inch tree tells you if your blade and pressure are right before you commit a full sheet.

A short history of the Christmas tree motif

Decorating evergreen trees in winter has roots in several European traditions, and the custom of bringing a decorated tree indoors at Christmas spread widely during the nineteenth century. Over time the shape itself became a symbol, simplified on cards, fabrics and ornaments into the stacked triangle we recognize instantly today. The designs on this page follow that long tradition of simplification, from the realistic Sawtooth Pine to the almost abstract Fishbone and Modern Stacked trees.

Building a matching set

Trees look great in groups. Pair a tall, narrow tree with a wider one, or use the same design at three sizes for a little forest. For shirts, give each family member the same tree in a different color. For signs, run a row of small trees along the bottom edge and keep the text above them.

Pairing trees with other designs

A tree rarely appears alone in Christmas decor. Top a plain tree with a star from the Christmas star collection, hang ornaments around it on a card, or scatter snowflakes behind it for a winter scene. Because every design on the site uses the same clean, solid style, mixed designs look like they belong together.

Trees for every room

  • Kitchen: the Potted Tabletop tree on towels, jars and recipe cards.
  • Kids’ rooms: the Scalloped and Bauble Dot trees as wall decals and pillow designs.
  • Entryway: the Classic Tiered or Sawtooth Pine tree on a porch leaner.
  • Living room: the Chevron or Modern Stacked tree on framed prints and throw pillows.

Christmas Tree SVG questions

Which Christmas tree SVG is best for a shirt?

For iron-on shirts, solid single-piece trees work best: the Classic Tiered Christmas Tree, the Scalloped Christmas Tree and the Sawtooth Pine Tree all press cleanly at 8 to 10 inches on an adult shirt.

How do I cut a layered Christmas tree in different colors?

Download the color SVG. In Cricut Design Space each layer (tree, trunk and topper) arrives as its own color and cuts on its own mat. Stack the smaller trunk and topper pieces on top of the green tree, or cut the tree shape as a base and layer the details over it.

Can I add a name or year to these trees?

Yes. Add text under or beside the tree in your cutting software, using a font you are licensed to use. The Round Badge Christmas Tree and the Heart Cut-Out Christmas Tree leave natural space for a short word or date.

Why are some tree designs made of several pieces?

A few styles, such as the Modern Stacked Christmas Tree and the Garland Swoop Christmas Tree, are made of separate bands on purpose. Each design page lists how many pieces it has, so you know before you cut. Keep the pieces grouped in your software so they stay aligned.
