About this design

The Bow-Topped Bauble swaps the usual metal cap for a ribbon bow. Two open bow loops spread to either side, a round knot sits in the middle, and two ribbon tails hang down over the top of the ball. A short neck joins the bow to the ornament, so the design cuts as one piece.

The bow makes it feel like a gift, which suits gift tags, Christmas cards and anything wrapped with love.

Project ideas

  • Gift tags. The bow makes it look like a tiny wrapped present.
  • Two-color ornaments. Green ball and red bow in cardstock or acrylic.
  • Shirts. A bold ornament with a bow in iron-on.
  • Party invitations. A festive motif for a holiday party.
  • Wreath accents. Hang small ones on a door wreath.

Color ideas

The default color version is green with a red bow and a white shine. Other ideas:

  • Red ball with a gold bow
  • White ball with a red bow for a candy-cane look
  • Navy ball with a silver bow
  • Blush ball with a burgundy bow

Size and cutting tips

This ornament passes our cut checks from about 1.5 inches tall. The bow loops have small openings; weed them first.

For a layered cardstock ornament, cut the bow layer from glitter cardstock for extra sparkle.

Step by step: a gift tag with a real ribbon

  1. Download the solid SVG and size it to 3 inches tall.
  2. Cut it from green cardstock and the bow from red glitter cardstock using the color file.
  3. Glue the bow onto the top of the ornament.
  4. Punch a small hole just below the bow’s knot.
  5. Write the recipient’s name on the ball.
  6. Thread a thin red ribbon through the hole and tie it to the gift.

Good to know

The bow replaces the cap entirely, so there is no separate hanging loop; use the gap between the bow loops or a punched hole to hang it.

Variations to try

  • Cut the bow from plaid or gingham-patterned iron-on for a cozy, country look.
  • Make the ball from kraft cardstock and the bow from red velvet paper.
  • Write a short message across the ball, such as a name and the year.
  • Make a set of small ones as table place cards, with each guest’s name on the ball.
