About this design
The Sector Star Snowflake is built from broad, flat shapes. A wide diamond plate sits on each arm, the arms end in pointed diamond tips, and a short pair of branches near each tip adds a little texture. At the center, a solid hexagon gives the eye a strong anchor.
Because so much of the design is made of solid planes, it carries color well and looks almost like a piece of stained glass when layered. It is a good middle ground for crafters who like the geometric look but want a slightly lighter feel than the Crystal Plate design.
Project ideas
- Stained-glass window art. Cut the base from black cardstock and back the gaps with colored tissue or vellum.
- Tote bags. A 9-inch flake in two colors of iron-on on a natural canvas tote.
- Wall art. Paint it as a stencil on a square canvas in metallic paint.
- Gift box lids. Adhere a 4-inch flake to the lid of a kraft gift box.
- Laser-cut coasters. The solid plates engrave cleanly on cork or slate.
Color ideas
The navy base and ice blue top is the default. The plates make bolder combinations work too:
- Teal and gold for a modern jewel-tone look
- Burgundy and blush for a winter wedding
- White and silver glitter for a classic sparkle
- Two shades of green for a pine-forest feel
Size and cutting tips
The narrowest points on this design are the joins where the plates meet the arms, and they cut cleanly from about 2.5 inches wide. Above 4 inches it becomes a very easy cut, even in felt or craft foam.
For the layered version, cut the top layer from a slightly thinner material, such as 65 lb cardstock over an 80 lb base, so the stack stays flat when you glue it.
Step by step: a stained-glass window piece
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 8 inches.
- Cut it from black cardstock.
- Cut pieces of colored vellum or tissue paper slightly larger than each open area around the plates.
- Glue the colored pieces to the back of the black snowflake with a thin glue stick, overlapping their edges onto the black.
- Trim any excess paper around the outside edge.
- Tape it to a sunny window and let the light shine through the colors.
Pairs well with
The Crystal Plate Snowflake is its closest cousin, and the Diamond Lattice Snowflake continues the diamond theme with a lighter touch.
