About this design

Most snowflakes have six arms. This one has twelve. Six long arms with diamond tips and a pair of branches alternate with six shorter arms ending in small dots, and they all meet at a six-pointed star in the middle. The extra arms fill the gaps and turn the snowflake into a sparkling starburst.

It is a festive, celebratory design that sits halfway between a snowflake and a star, which makes it useful for New Year’s projects as well as Christmas.

Project ideas

  • Party decorations. Cut a dozen from metallic cardstock for a winter or New Year’s Eve garland.
  • Ornament overlays. Layer it over a circle of contrasting cardstock for a medallion-style ornament.
  • Cookie stencils. Cut the solid file from food-safe stencil plastic for dusting powdered sugar over cookies and cakes.
  • Sweaters and hoodies. A large 10-inch flake in glitter iron-on is eye-catching on a dark hoodie.
  • Gift tags. A 2.5-inch flake with a punched hole near a tip makes a quick tag.

Color ideas

The default blue and pale blue keeps it wintry. To push the starburst feel, try:

  • Gold and pale gold for New Year’s
  • Silver and white for a frosty, sparkling look
  • Red and gold for a traditional Christmas card
  • Iridescent or holographic vinyl as a single layer

Size and cutting tips

This design passes our cut checks from about 2.5 inches wide. The short arms are slimmer than the long ones, so give it a little extra size, around 3 inches, if you are using glitter or holographic iron-on, which is thicker than plain vinyl.

For stencils, cut from 5 to 7 mil stencil sheet and keep the design above 4 inches so the short arms do not curl.

Step by step: a New Year’s party garland

  1. Download the solid SVG and size it to 3 inches.
  2. Duplicate it a dozen times across a mat, leaving a quarter inch between copies.
  3. Cut half from gold metallic cardstock and half from silver.
  4. Punch a small hole in one long arm of each snowflake.
  5. String them on fishing line or thin ribbon, alternating gold and silver, and tie a small knot after each so they stay evenly spaced.
  6. Hang the garland across a doorway or along the edge of a party table.

Pairs well with

The Sixteen-Ray Starburst continues the starburst theme, and the Classic Six-Point Snowflake makes a calmer companion in a cluster.
