About this design

The Bethlehem Guiding Star draws on the star from the nativity story that guided the wise men. It has four points: a short one at the top, two at the sides and a long ray stretching downward, as if pointing to a place below. A smaller star, rotated to the diagonals, sits behind the center to suggest a glow.

The long ray makes it instantly recognizable as a guiding star. It suits nativity scenes, church crafts and Christmas cards with a quieter, reflective tone.

Project ideas

  • Nativity scene backdrops. A large star above a stable silhouette on a wood board.
  • Church decorations and programs. A clean motif for Christmas services and pageants.
  • Christmas cards. Gold foil star on a deep blue card.
  • Memorial ornaments. A gentle star with a name and dates, engraved on wood or acrylic.
  • Window art. White or gold vinyl high on a window.

Color ideas

The default color version is gold with a pale gold glow star. Other ideas:

  • Silver and white on navy for a night sky
  • White and pale yellow for a soft, glowing look
  • Gold on black for a dramatic card
  • Single-color white for church window decals

Size and cutting tips

The long rays are slender near their tips, so this design needs about 3.5 inches to cut cleanly, and it looks best from 5 inches upward. Use a fresh blade on foil and metallic cardstock.

On a nativity board, size the star so the long ray points toward the center of the scene below it.

Step by step: a nativity scene board

  1. Paint a wood board deep navy and let it dry.
  2. Download the solid SVG and size it to about a third of the board’s width.
  3. Cut the star from gold permanent vinyl, and cut a simple stable silhouette from black vinyl in your own design.
  4. Place the stable near the bottom of the board, then the star high above it with the long ray pointing down toward the stable.
  5. Add a few tiny white dots or small stars around it for a night sky.
  6. Seal with a clear coat if the board will stand outdoors.

Good to know

The long lower ray naturally draws the eye downward, which is why this star works so well above a scene, a name or a greeting.

Pairs well with

The Heart Christmas Ornament suits memorial projects, and the Compass Rose Christmas Star offers another four-point star.
