About this design
The Compass Rose Christmas Star layers two four-point stars: a long, slender one pointing to the four compass directions and a shorter one rotated to the diagonals, with a small round hub where they meet. The effect is a classic eight-point compass rose that also reads as a twinkling star.
It is elegant and versatile: festive in gold, nautical in navy, wintry in silver. It is also a lovely way to say “guiding star” without a specifically religious image.
Project ideas
- Coastal Christmas decor. Navy and white stars for a beach-house tree.
- Travel-themed gifts. Pair it with coordinates or a destination on a mug or tote.
- Winter wedding stationery. Gold compass stars on navy invitations.
- Graduation or new-job cards. A “find your way” message beside the star.
- Laser-engraved ornaments. It engraves beautifully on dark wood.
Color ideas
The default color version has a navy main star with gold diagonal points. Other ideas:
- Gold and white for a classic Christmas star
- Silver and pale blue for a frosty look
- Black and copper for a modern, industrial style
- Single-color white for a window decal
Size and cutting tips
The long points are slender toward their tips, so this design needs about 3.5 inches to cut cleanly. It looks best from 4 inches upward, where the difference between the long and short points really shows.
When layering, cut the long star as the base and the shorter diagonal star from a second color to sit on top.
Step by step: a coastal ornament set
- Download the color SVG and size it to 4 inches.
- Cut the long star from navy cardstock and the short diagonal star from gold.
- Glue the gold star centered on the navy star.
- Cut a 4.5-inch circle of white cardstock as a backing and glue the compass star to it.
- Punch a hole at the top and tie it with jute twine.
- Make several in navy, white and sand colors for a beach-house tree.
Good to know
Because the long points mark north, south, east and west, you can turn this into a real compass rose by adding small letters at each long point.
A note on layering
For depth, raise the short star on foam dots so it casts a small shadow on the long one.
Pairs well with
The Eight-Point North Star shares the compass style, and the Arrowhead Snowflake adds a matching sense of direction.
