About this design
The Star Cut-Out Christmas Star is a star full of stars. A chunky five-point star with slightly softened edges has a small star cut out of each point and a round window in its center. The cut-outs let a background color or texture show through, so the design looks decorated without needing extra layers.
The round center hole is handy, too: thread a ribbon through it for an ornament, or place a tiny photo or a sequin behind it.
Project ideas
- Ornaments. Laser-cut from wood with a ribbon through the center hole.
- Layered cards. Back the cut-outs with gold glitter paper.
- Kids’ shirts. The fabric color shows through the cut-outs.
- Window stars. Light shines through the six openings.
- Gift tags. Write a name below the center window.
Color ideas
The default color version is red with a gold ring around the center. Other ideas:
- Navy star backed with silver glitter
- Gold star backed with red paper
- White star on a green shirt
- Pastel pink backed with white for a nursery
Size and cutting tips
This star passes our cut checks from about 1.5 inches wide, though the small star cut-outs are easiest to weed from 3 inches upward. Weed the six openings first, then remove the outer waste.
For ornaments in thick materials, size it to at least 4 inches so the cut-out stars stay crisp.
Step by step: a backed glitter ornament
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 4 inches.
- Cut it from 3 mm wood on a laser, or from red cardstock.
- For the backing, open the solid SVG again, keep only the outer edge (Cricut: Contour › Hide All Contours; Silhouette: Release Compound Path and delete the inner shapes), shrink it by about 2 percent and cut it from gold glitter cardstock.
- Glue the glitter star behind the red star so it shows through the five small stars.
- Thread a ribbon through the center hole and tie a bow.
- Write the year on the back in metallic pen.
Good to know
The center hole is wide enough for standard 3/8-inch ribbon, so the ornament doubles as a gift topper.
A note on light
Hang this star in a window or in front of tree lights and the five small stars and the center circle glow, scattering little star shapes of light.
Variations to try
- Fill each small star with a different color of glitter paper for a confetti effect.
- Skip the backing for a window ornament that throws star-shaped light.
Pairs well with
The Double Outline Christmas Star and the Ring of Stars Wreath continue the star-on-star theme.
