About this design

The Tree Topper Star with Coil shows the classic topper that sits on the very tip of a Christmas tree: a five-point star mounted on a straight stem, with a coiled spring wrapped around the lower part to grip the treetop. It cuts as two pieces, the star and the stem with its coil.

It is a charming, slightly nostalgic image that works as a motif in its own right, and as a template for a real cardstock or wood topper.

Project ideas

  • Christmas cards. A shiny gold topper on a plain green card.
  • Tree-decorating party invitations. A fun motif for a “trim the tree” night.
  • Kitchen towels and aprons. A small topper in iron-on.
  • Real toppers. Cut the star from thick chipboard and use the design as a guide for wiring a coil.
  • Stickers and tags. A small topper sticker for gift wrap.

Color ideas

The default color version uses a gold star with a silver stem and coil. Other ideas:

  • Silver star with a gold coil
  • Red star with a gold coil for a retro look
  • All white on a dark card
  • Copper and brown for a vintage feel

Size and cutting tips

The coil rings are narrow, so this design needs about 4 inches tall to cut cleanly. If you need it smaller, cut only the star, or simplify the coil by deleting some rings in your software.

Keep the star and stem grouped so they stay aligned.

Step by step: a retro holiday card

  1. Download the color SVG and size it to 4.5 inches tall.
  2. Cut the star from gold foil cardstock and the stem and coil from silver.
  3. Glue the stem and coil on a deep green card front, then the star on top.
  4. Draw a few short lines around the star with a gold pen for a twinkling effect.
  5. Write a short greeting inside.
  6. Seal the envelope with a small gold star sticker.

Good to know

The coil detail is what makes this read as a tree topper rather than a plain star, so keep it visible by sizing the design at 4 inches or more.

A note on scale

This design is a picture of a topper, so it works at any size on cards and shirts.

Pairs well with

Pair it with the Classic Tiered Christmas Tree or the Classic Five-Point Christmas Star.
