About this design

Some designs earn their place by being exactly what you expect, and this is one of them. The Classic Tiered Christmas Tree has three triangular tiers that grow wider toward the bottom, a straight rectangular trunk and a five-point star sitting on the very top. Each tier overlaps the one above, giving the outline the familiar zigzag edge of a stylized fir.

The star, tiers and trunk are merged into a single shape, so the solid file cuts as one piece and stays in register when you press or apply it. In the color version, the tree, trunk and star are separate layers in green, brown and gold.

Project ideas

  • Family shirts. Use the same tree on everyone’s shirt and change the color per person.
  • Christmas cards. Cut the tree from green glitter cardstock and the star from gold foil cardstock.
  • Porch leaners. Paint it through a stencil onto a tall wooden board.
  • Kids’ coloring sheets. Print the outline version as a large coloring page.
  • Countdown boards. Use small trees as day markers on a homemade advent board.

Color ideas

Traditional green, brown and gold is the default. Other palettes that suit a classic tree:

  • White tree with a gold star on a red background for a festive card
  • Dark green with a silver star for a wintry, elegant look
  • Red tree with a white star for a candy-colored version
  • Kraft brown with a white star for a rustic tag

Size and cutting tips

This tree passes our cut checks from about 2 inches tall, which makes it handy for tags and confetti. The star points are the slimmest part, so if you are using glitter iron-on or felt, give it at least 3 inches.

For layered cardstock, cut the color file and glue the trunk and star directly over the green base; they line up exactly because every layer shares the same outline.

Step by step: matching family shirts

  1. Download the solid SVG and size it to 9 inches for adults, 6 inches for kids and 4 inches for toddlers.
  2. Add each person’s name under the tree in the same font, and attach the text so it cuts in place.
  3. Mirror every design and cut from iron-on, giving each person a different color tree.
  4. Weed the trees and names, keeping each on its own carrier sheet.
  5. Press each tree centered about three inches below the collar.
  6. Line everyone up for the family photo in matching colors, or mix the colors for a rainbow row.

Pairs well with

Add the Classic Five-Point Christmas Star as a separate topper or tag, and the Classic Round Christmas Bauble for a traditional set.
