About this design

The Heart Cut-Out Christmas Tree is a tall, narrow tree with four overlapping tiers. A heart is cut right through the middle, so whatever is behind the tree shows through, and a small heart replaces the usual star at the top. The trunk is slim to match the tree’s tall proportions.

The heart turns a simple tree into something personal. It suits couples’ first Christmas, baby’s first Christmas, family gifts and anything made with love.

Project ideas

  • First Christmas ornaments. Laser-cut it from wood and write a name and year below the heart.
  • Couples’ shirts or mugs. Add initials on either side of the tree.
  • Window decorations. The heart cut-out glows when light shines through.
  • Valentine-meets-Christmas cards. Cut it from green cardstock with red behind the heart.
  • Family photo props. A large version cut from foam board.

Color ideas

The default color version uses a green tree, a brown trunk and a red heart on top. Other ideas:

  • Pink tree with a red heart for a sweet, nursery-friendly look
  • White tree with a gold heart on a navy card
  • Kraft tree with a red heart for rustic gifts
  • Red tree with a white heart for a bold, festive version

Size and cutting tips

This design passes our cut checks from about 2 inches tall. The heart cut-out is large, so it weeds easily at any size. For layered cardstock, glue a piece of red or patterned paper behind the tree so it shows through the heart.

The topper heart is a separate shape that touches the tip of the tree; if you cut in thick material, check that the join is wide enough for your material and size up if needed.

Step by step: a first Christmas wood ornament

  1. Download the solid SVG and size it to 4 inches tall.
  2. Cut it from 3 mm basswood or plywood on a laser.
  3. Sand the edges lightly and wipe away dust.
  4. Paint the tree green and the heart topper red, or leave the wood natural for a rustic look.
  5. Engrave or write the name and year on the trunk area or the back.
  6. Thread a thin ribbon through a small hole drilled under the heart topper, and seal with a clear coat.

Pairs well with
