About this design
Holly is one of the oldest Christmas plants, and the Holly and Berry Wreath celebrates it. Fourteen pairs of spiky holly leaves are arranged around a ring, each pair pointing in two directions, and clusters of three round berries sit between every other pair. The spiky edges give the wreath a lively, textured outline.
Leaves, berries and ring are one piece in the solid file; the color version gives each its own layer.
Project ideas
- Traditional Christmas cards. Deep green holly with red berries on cream.
- Door signs. A holly wreath around a family name.
- Tablecloths and napkins. A small wreath in the corner of each napkin.
- Laser-engraved ornaments. The spiky leaves engrave beautifully on wood.
- Pillow covers. Green and red iron-on on a linen cover.
Color ideas
The default color version uses a dark green ring, green leaves and red berries. Other ideas:
- Gold leaves with red berries for a glam card
- White leaves with red berries for a frosted wreath
- Variegated: light and dark green leaves cut as two layers
- All red for a bold, single-color decal
Size and cutting tips
The holly spikes need room, so this wreath passes our cut checks from about 2.5 inches wide, and the leaves look crispest from 4 inches. When weeding vinyl, lift the waste out of the spaces between spikes before removing the outer waste.
For four-color layering, cut the berries from glossy red cardstock or vinyl for a shiny, berry-like finish.
Step by step: holiday napkins
- Download the color SVG and size it to 3 inches.
- Cut the leaves from green iron-on and the berries from red, mirrored.
- Weed both layers, lifting the waste out from between the holly spikes first.
- Press the green leaves onto one corner of a linen or cotton napkin.
- Line up and press the red berries on top under a pressing sheet.
- Repeat for a full set and wash inside out on a gentle cycle.
Good to know
Holly has been used in winter decorations for centuries, long before the modern Christmas tree, so this wreath gives a table or a door an especially traditional, old-world feel.
Variations to try
- Cut the berries from glossy red vinyl so they shine like real berries.
- Make a gold-leaf version for an elegant card.
- Use a single leaf pair as a small accent on gift tags.
