About this design
The Striped Window Candy Cane solves a common problem: how to get a striped cane in a single cut. Instead of separate stripe pieces, the stripes are cut out of the cane as narrow, angled windows, leaving a thin border around the edge that holds everything together. Place it on a white surface and the windows become white stripes.
It is the perfect choice when you want a striped look without layering two colors of vinyl, felt or cardstock.
Project ideas
- One-color shirts. Red iron-on on a white shirt gives a red-and-white cane in one press.
- Glass decals. Red vinyl on a window or glass jar lets the light through the stripes.
- Wood stencils. Paint through the stripe windows onto a white-painted board.
- Stamps. Cut it from adhesive foam for a striped cane stamp.
- Cards. Red glitter cardstock on a white card.
Color ideas
The default color version is red with white stripes showing through. Other ideas:
- Green on white for a mint cane
- Gold on white for an elegant look
- Red on gold glitter paper for a sparkly stripe
- White on a red shirt for a reversed cane
Size and cutting tips
The stripe windows and border are narrow, so this design needs about 3 inches to cut cleanly. Weed the windows first, lifting each from one end, then remove the outer waste.
For thicker materials such as felt or glitter iron-on, size it up to 5 inches so the border stays strong.
Step by step: a one-color mason jar
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 4 inches tall.
- Cut it from red permanent vinyl.
- Weed all the stripe windows, then the outer waste.
- Clean a clear glass jar with rubbing alcohol.
- Apply the cane with transfer tape, smoothing it around the curve from the center outward.
- Fill the jar with white candies or marshmallows so the white shows through the stripes.
Good to know
What sits behind the cane becomes its second color, so the same decal looks different on a white mug, a clear jar or a gold gift bag.
Variations to try
- Cut it from white vinyl for a red mug.
- Use it as a reusable stencil for painting stripes on wood.
