About this design
The Striped Band Bauble takes the classic round ornament and runs two horizontal stripes through it. The stripes are cut right across the ball, so the solid file splits into three bands: a cap section at the top, a wide band in the middle and a bowl at the bottom. In the color version, the middle band gets a contrasting color, like the painted stripe on a vintage glass ornament.
The gaps make the design come alive when layered over a second color or a glitter paper.
Project ideas
- Layered cardstock ornaments. Glue the bands onto a contrasting circle so the stripes show.
- Two-color iron-on. Green bands with a white middle stripe on a sweatshirt.
- Wood ornaments. Cut the bands and paint the middle one a different color.
- Window clings. Light shows through the stripes.
- Gift tags. Write a name on the wide middle band.
Color ideas
The default color version is green with a white middle band and gold cap. Other ideas:
- Red with a gold band
- Navy with a silver band
- Pink with a white band for a retro look
- White with a red band for a candy-cane feel
Size and cutting tips
This design passes our cut checks from about 2 inches tall. Because it is three pieces, keep them grouped while resizing and use transfer tape so the stripe gaps stay even.
For a one-piece version, simply cut the ornament body without the stripes by welding the bands together in your software.
Step by step: a layered cardstock ornament
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 4 inches tall.
- Cut the three bands from green cardstock.
- For a full round bauble, open the solid SVG again and keep only the outer edge (Cricut: Contour › Hide All Contours; Silhouette: Release Compound Path and delete the inner shapes), then cut it from gold glitter cardstock.
- Glue the green bands onto the gold bauble, leaving the stripe gaps open so the glitter shows through.
- Cut a second plain bauble for the back and glue it on, sandwiching a ribbon loop at the cap.
- Write a name or a year on the wide middle band with a white gel pen.
Good to know
The two stripes sit at slightly different heights, echoing the painted bands on vintage glass ornaments, so the design looks traditional rather than mechanical.
Variations to try
- Use the outline file for a pen-drawn version on a card.
Pairs well with
The Garland Swoop Christmas Tree shares the banded look, and the Zigzag Band Bauble is a playful variation.
