About this design
The Polka Dot Bauble is pure fun. Nineteen round dots are cut out of the ornament in neat, staggered rows that follow the curve of the ball, so the background color shows through as polka dots. A cap and loop sit on top, and the color version adds a white shine near the upper left.
Because the dots are cut-outs, the ornament stays one piece; back it with any color or pattern and the dots take on that look.
Project ideas
- Kids’ ornaments. Back it with bright paper or let kids color behind the dots.
- Light-up ornaments. Lights shine through the dots on the tree.
- Baby shower or nursery decor. Pastel polka-dot baubles on a garland.
- Shirts. The shirt color fills the dots.
- Gift tags. Back each tag with a different color.
Color ideas
The default color version is ice blue with a silver cap and white shine. Other ideas:
- Red backed with white for a classic polka dot
- Pink backed with gold glitter
- Mint backed with white for a soft, modern look
- Black backed with gold for a party ornament
Size and cutting tips
This bauble passes our cut checks from about 2 inches tall, but the dots are easiest to weed from 3 inches upward. Weed every dot before removing the outer waste, working row by row.
For laser cutting, the dots make a quick, clean cut and a lovely light pattern.
Step by step: a backed polka-dot ornament
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 4 inches tall.
- Cut it from ice blue cardstock and weed all nineteen dots.
- Cut a plain bauble of the same size from white glitter cardstock.
- Glue the blue bauble on top so the white glitter shows through each dot.
- Glue a second plain bauble to the back with a ribbon loop at the cap.
- Make a set in different colors for a cheerful, modern tree.
Good to know
Only dots that sit fully inside the ball are kept, so the pattern stops neatly short of the edge and the outline stays strong and easy to cut.
Variations to try
- Back it with a photo for a playful peek-through picture ornament.
- Use different colors behind each row of dots for a striped-and-spotted look.
- Cut it from felt and sew a contrasting button into a few of the dots.
Pairs well with
