About this design
The Rounded Cookie-Cutter Star is the soft-cornered cousin of the classic star. Its five points are short and plump, and every point and inner corner is rounded, so the shape looks like a star cookie or a plush toy. It has more area than a sharp star, which makes it feel bold and cheerful.
The rounded edges are also practical: there are no fragile tips to tear, so it suits felt, foam, chipboard and thick glitter cardstock.
Project ideas
- Kids’ crafts. Pre-cut stars from foam sheets for decorating.
- Felt ornaments. Two felt stars stitched together and stuffed.
- Cookie decorating templates. Use the outline as a guide for piping (keep stencils and templates food-safe).
- Baby and toddler shirts. A soft star in iron-on, perhaps with a name below.
- Star-shaped tags. Rounded points survive being tied to gifts and tossed in bags.
Color ideas
The default color version is gold with a lighter gold center. For playful looks:
- Pastel yellow and white for a nursery
- Red with a white center for a candy-colored star
- Rainbow sets for kids’ party garlands
- Silver glitter for a sparkly ornament
Size and cutting tips
This star passes our cut checks from about 1.5 inches wide and is happy in almost any material. For felt, use a rotary-blade machine if you have one, or stabilize the felt with an iron-on backing before cutting with a fine-point blade.
For stuffed ornaments, cut two copies and add a quarter-inch seam allowance by offsetting the shape in your software.
Step by step: a felt plush ornament
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 4 inches.
- Cut two stars from yellow or gold felt.
- Place them together and blanket-stitch around the edge with embroidery floss, leaving a one-inch gap.
- Fill lightly with stuffing, pushing it into the points with a chopstick.
- Stitch the gap closed and add a loop of ribbon at the top point.
- Stitch a simple face or a name on the front for a child’s keepsake.
Good to know
The rounded points mean no fiddly turning or clipping: felt edges stay neat without fraying, and the shape is easy for children to sew with a blunt needle.
A note on proportions
The points are deliberately short, so the star stays recognizable even when cut from fabric that stretches a little.
