About this design

Not every Christmas tree lives in the living room. The Potted Tabletop Christmas Tree shows a compact three-tier tree growing out of a tapered flowerpot with a wide rim, a short trunk between them and a gold star on top. It has the cozy feel of a tree on a kitchen table or a windowsill.

The pot gives the design a solid base, which makes it look grounded on cards and signs and gives you an easy place for a small name or date.

Project ideas

  • Plant-lover gifts. Put it on a mug or a tote for a friend who keeps a tabletop tree.
  • Teacher gifts. Add it to a small planter or a gift tag.
  • Kitchen towels. Iron it onto a tea towel in green and terracotta.
  • Cards and invitations. A cozy design for holiday dinner invitations.
  • Small-space decor. A vinyl decal on a fridge or a cabinet door.

Color ideas

The default color version uses green for the tree, terracotta for the pot and gold for the star. Other ideas:

  • White pot with a sage tree for a modern kitchen
  • Gold pot with a dark green tree for an elegant card
  • Red pot with a green tree and white star for a traditional look
  • Black and white for a minimal print

Size and cutting tips

The narrowest point is where the trunk meets the pot, so this design passes our cut checks from about 2.5 inches tall. On shirts and totes, 6 to 9 inches works well.

In the color version, the pot and trunk form one layer and the star another. Cut the pot from a textured material such as kraft cardstock for a nice contrast with the tree.

Step by step: a kitchen tea towel

  1. Download the color SVG and size it to 6 inches tall.
  2. Cut the tree from green iron-on, the pot from terracotta-colored iron-on and the star from gold, all mirrored.
  3. Weed each layer and keep them on their carrier sheets.
  4. Press the green tree first, about 3 inches above the hem of the towel.
  5. Line up and press the pot, then the star, covering finished layers with a pressing sheet.
  6. Wash inside out on a gentle cycle and avoid fabric softener, which can weaken iron-on adhesive.
