About this design

The Pine Sprig Snowflake sits halfway between a snowflake and a sprig of evergreen. Each arm has four pairs of narrow branches swept steeply upward, like pine needles, and finishes in an arrow-shaped tip. The arms meet at a small round center.

It is the snowflake for rustic and woodland decor: cabins, farmhouse kitchens, nature-inspired gift wrap and anything that pairs well with kraft paper, twine and wood.

Project ideas

  • Rustic wood signs. Pair it with a family name or “Let it snow” on a stained plank.
  • Kraft gift wrap. Use it as a stencil and dab white paint onto brown kraft paper.
  • Burlap and canvas. Iron it onto burlap stockings or canvas totes in green or cream.
  • Wood-slice ornaments. Laser-engrave or burn it onto birch slices.
  • Cabin-themed mugs. Forest green permanent vinyl on a white enamel camping mug.

Color ideas

The default green with a light green inner layer gives a fresh evergreen look. For other rustic palettes:

  • Cream on kraft-colored cardstock
  • Deep green and gold for a classic Christmas card
  • White on dark green for a snowy-pine effect
  • Burnt orange and brown for a cozy cabin theme

Size and cutting tips

Twelve small spaces sit between the branches near the tips. They are big enough to weed from about 2.5 inches wide, and the design looks crisp from there upward. For burlap and other textured fabrics, use 6 inches or more and a heat-transfer vinyl made for textured surfaces.

On wood with a laser, run a quick test on a scrap to set your power, because the narrow branches can over-burn on soft woods.

Step by step: a rustic wood-slice ornament

  1. Measure a birch or pine wood slice and size the solid SVG half an inch smaller than its diameter.
  2. Cut the snowflake from removable adhesive vinyl to use as a stencil.
  3. Weed the snowflake itself out of the vinyl, leaving the background as the stencil.
  4. Apply the stencil to the wood slice and burnish the edges well.
  5. Dab white or green acrylic paint over the stencil with a sponge, using light coats.
  6. Peel the stencil while the paint is still slightly wet, then seal the slice with a matte varnish.

Pine sprig or snowflake?

Seen from a distance this design reads as a snowflake; up close, the swept-back branches look like evergreen needles. That double meaning is what makes it work for both Christmas and plain winter decor, from a December mantel to a January cabin weekend.

Pairs well with

The Pine Needle Wreath and the Sawtooth Pine Tree make a matching woodland set.
