About this design
The Star in a Ring Ornament is designed to hang. A five-point star fills a circular ring, its points just touching the band, and an ornament-style cap with a round hanging loop sits on top. Everything joins into one piece, so you can cut it from wood, acrylic or thick cardstock and hang it straight on the tree.
The spaces between the star and the ring are open, so the ornament looks light and lets the tree lights shine through.
Project ideas
- Laser-cut wood ornaments. Cut from 3 mm plywood and paint or stain.
- Acrylic ornaments. Cut from colored or mirror acrylic for a sparkly finish.
- Layered cardstock ornaments. Glue two copies back to back with ribbon through the loop.
- Gift toppers. Tie a small one onto a present instead of a tag.
- Window hangings. Hang several at different heights in a window.
Color ideas
The default color version uses a red star with a gold ring, cap and loop. Other ideas:
- Gold star in a silver ring for a metallic look
- White star in a green ring for a classic feel
- Natural wood with a painted red star
- Navy and gold for an elegant tree
Size and cutting tips
This ornament passes our cut checks from about 2 inches tall. For tree ornaments, 3 to 4 inches is typical. The hanging loop is sized for ribbon or an ornament hook; if you use thick ribbon, size the ornament up so the loop opening grows too.
Weed or punch out the six open spaces before removing the ornament from the mat.
Step by step: laser-cut acrylic ornaments
- Download the solid SVG and size it to 3.5 inches tall.
- Run a test cut on a scrap of 3 mm acrylic to set your power and speed.
- Leave the protective film on the acrylic during cutting to prevent smoke marks.
- Cut a batch in red, gold mirror and clear acrylic.
- Peel the film and wipe each ornament with a soft cloth.
- Thread a ribbon or ornament hook through the loop.
Good to know
The cap and loop are part of the cut, so there is no need to drill a hole or glue on a hanger afterward.
A note on finishes
Natural wood with a painted star looks rustic; mirror acrylic looks glamorous.
